Becoming Warhol
I’ve been carying around this image for about 10 years now so I thought I’d scan and share it.
It’s my favorite picture of Warhol. It’s a younger Andy who is about to fully understand and embrace his character as an artist. He wasn’t the “famed” Andy Warhol at this point, it was 2 years after his debut as a “pop” artist, but he knew this path would change his life forever.
What’s interesting about Andy is he went from making art to being Art. Here he is in the studio (shopping mart) buying Coke, Brillo and Campbell’s soup. All of these items were household names and in just a few years after this photo so was Andy Warhol.
Why so serious Andy?
What a great photo.
Emily Carr, a Canadian painter. She’s not exactly my history ‘crush’, but she’s beautiful and rather badass. She was kicked out of ‘Ladies Art Club’ for cursing and smoking and was associated with the Group of Seven, not only that but she also kept multiple pets, including a monkey. She painted the Canadian landscape and First Nations traditions, because she feared they would soon disappear.
